Not From Bormla: Trump’s Personnel Chief Was Actually Born In Uzbekistan

Sergio Gor, the man in charge of White House appointments under U.S. President Donald Trump, was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan – not Malta, as many assumed.
Gor, who has been described as “the most powerful man you’ve never heard of” is a close aide to Trump and oversees the appointment of thousands of officials, placing him at the heart of the administration’s policymaking. But his low public profile left many curious about his origins.
Now, an investigation by the Times of Malta and OCCRP has revealed that Gor was born Sergio Gorokhovsky on November 30, 1986, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, then part of the Soviet Union. His lawyer, Robert Garson, confirmed the birthplace, which was also recorded in a notarised Maltese property document.
This revelation contrasts with earlier portrayals in U.S. media, including a December 2024 Washington Post profile, which described him simply as an immigrant from Malta, without clarifying his birthplace. Gor had repeatedly declined to disclose where he was born, only telling the New York Post in June that it was “not in Russia.”
Records show that Gor spent at least five years of his childhood in Malta. His mother, listed as an Israeli national, registered a company in Malta in 1994 through which she purchased a house in Cospicua. Gor bought this house from the company in 2021 for €255,000, which his lawyer said was to keep the family home after his mother passed away.
Gor also attended De La Salle College, a Catholic school for boys in nearby Vittoriosa, between 1996 and 1999. The school confirmed his attendance and provided a matching date of birth.
The family later emigrated to the U.S., where Gor eventually became a citizen. His political career began in Senator Rand Paul’s office, where he was known for organising key visits including a 2018 trip to Moscow funded by the libertarian Cato Institute. Leaked Russian border records show he also flew through Moscow in 2017 en route to Rome. Garson dismissed any speculation about the trip, calling it a mere layover.
From there, Gor moved deeper into Trump’s circle. In 2020, he became chief of staff on the Trump Victory Finance Committee and later co-founded Winning Team Publishing with Donald Trump Jr. He also led the conservative PAC Right for America, which raised over $72 million in support of Trump’s 2024 campaign.
Gor’s story is a compelling blend of global migration, political ambition, and deep connections to both Malta and the U.S. While his Uzbek origins might surprise some, his formative years in Malta and powerful ascent in Washington make him one of the most unexpected power brokers of the Trump era.
