Pope Francis Battles Double Pneumonia, Vatican Cancels Public Engagements

Pope Francis’ health struggles continue as the Vatican confirmed he has been diagnosed with double pneumonia, further complicating his treatment at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.
The 88-year-old pontiff, who has been battling a respiratory infection for over a week, underwent a chest CAT scan on Tuesday, revealing the worsening condition.
The Vatican described his medical situation as “complex”, stating that his ongoing antibiotic and cortisone therapy for a previous polymicrobial infection has made treatment more difficult.
The Pope’s upcoming public engagements have been cancelled, including his general audience on Wednesday and the Jubilee audience on Saturday, 22nd February.
While still in hospital, Francis has continued his nightly phone calls to the Holy Family church in Gaza, with Father Gabriel Romanelli confirming the Pope was “tired but had a clear voice.”
Pope Francis has a long history of health issues, having had part of his lung removed in his youth, alongside past hospitalisations for respiratory infections, colon surgery, and mobility struggles.
Despite these challenges, the Vatican has reassured that he remains in good spirits.
