Russia Attacks Ukraine’s Power Grid In Major Strike, Blackouts Across Country
Russia has launched a major attack on Ukraine’s power grid, causing widespread blackouts that affected at least a million across the western region of the country.
Ukrainian news outlets Zerkalo Tyzhnya and Suspilne reported that explosions were heard in the cities of Odesa, Kropyvnytskyi, Kharkiv, Rivne and Lutsk early this morning, local officials reported.
Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, was also targeted by these attacks.
“Energy infrastructure is once again targeted by the enemy’s massive strike,” Ukrainian energy minister Herman Halushchenko wrote on Facebook.
He added that national power grid operator Ukrenergo had introduced emergency power cuts.
Residents of Kyiv were photographed seeking shelter in the metro as the city is on high alert for more attacks. People can be seen clutching their children or their pets amid this uncertain time.
Meanwhile, Russia’s air defence systems destroyed 25 Ukrainian drones over four regions overnight, the defence ministry has said.
It said 14 of the drones were destroyed over the Krasnodar region, six over the Bryansk region, three over Moscow-annexed Crimea and two over the Rostov region.
