‘Trade Wars Hurt Everyone, But Do Not Underestimate Europe’: Roberta Metsola Responds To US Tariffs

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has assured the world of Europe’s strength in a reaction to US President Donald Trump’s 10% blanket tariffs imposed on all US imports.
“Our approach may be different but it does not mean we are less impactful,” Metsola told Lovin Malta.
A baseline tariff of 10% will apply to all goods entering the US, while specific countries and regions will face even higher rates. The EU has been hit with a specific 20% tariff on all exports to the US.
This comes as the most recent escalation in the US trade war with the rest of the world, eliciting a strong reaction from leaders across the globe.
“I think tariffs are the wrong approach – trade wars inevitably hurt everyone, push prices up and damage investment confidence – but it would be short-sighted to dismiss this as being devoid of any method,” Metsola said.
However, she reiterated that this is likely a “tool of negotiation” to which Europe will reply with its “own leverage”, assuring that this will be clear, balanced and in line with global trade rules.
“Ultimately we should be talking about trade deals, not trade wars.”
Nonetheless, this comes as no surprise. The EU has been preparing for such a development, even though the US’ methodology to calculate the tariffs remains “unclear”.
The bloc will be cautious to react in a way that will not derail the transatlantic relationship which remains “strong”, especially on a parliamentary level: “The links between the United States Congress and the European Parliament are strong and will remain so.”
“I would always advocate for better and closer cooperation, particularly on trade, and I would caution against anyone underestimating Europe and our single market of 450 million people. Our approach may be different but it does not mean we are less impactful.”
Metsola concluded by assuring that Europe is “ready to stand up for them, to prove to our families, farmers, students and start-ups that this is a continent of the future – to attract people and companies back here.”
“That’s what we did this week in the European Parliament with critical votes that make our processes simpler, faster, more efficient and make Europe more competitive.
Similarly, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen assured of a balanced EU response but warned of “dire consequences” for millions.
