A staggering total of almost 10,000 people have so far been found dead following the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria over the last few days.

The death toll is currently at 9,400, with almost 40,000 suffering injuries from the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Turkey on Monday.

The initial quake was followed by hundreds of aftershocks, as well as another 7.5 magnitude earthquake just hours later.

There are currently 80,000 people aiding in the ongoing search and rescue missions within Turkey and Syria, as the freezing temperatures continue to complicate the delicate operation.

An hour ago, Turkey’s disaster management authority reported a total of 6,234 deaths in the country, and 37,000 people injured.

Meanwhile, the White Helmets volunteer rescue team said that more than 1,280 people had died within insurgent-held areas of Syria, with another 2,600 found injured.

In government-controlled parts of the country, the death toll rose to 1,250, the Syrian health minister reported.

Yesterday, Malta deployed around 30 members from the Civil Protection Department, to aid in the ongoing search and rescue operation.

Meanwhile, donations of canned food, winter clothes, and products are being accepted at the Turkish Embassy for Malta and the CPD stations of Xemxija and Ħal Far.
