Death Toll Rises To Five In Magdeburg Christmas Market Attack
Updated: Saturday 21st December 1.48pm
A festive Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, turned into a scene of horror as a car ploughed into a crowd, leaving two people dead, including a young child, and 68 injured—15 of them seriously.
The suspected driver, a 50-year-old Saudi doctor, has been arrested. Authorities have described the incident as a deliberate attack, with Saxony-Anhalt Governor Reiner Haseloff confirming the man acted alone using a rental car.
Police blocked off the area amid fears of explosives in the suspect’s vehicle. The man, who moved to Germany in 2006, had been practicing medicine in Bernburg, 25 miles south of Magdeburg. A police operation is now underway in Bernburg as investigations continue.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear. However, a Saudi source told Reuters that German authorities were previously warned about the suspect’s extremist social media posts.
The city of Magdeburg is in mourning, with mayor Simone Borris announcing closures of cultural institutions, including theatres and museums, in the coming days. Governor Haseloff shared condolences, stating: “Every life lost to this attack is a tragedy—one life too many.”
Unfortunately the death toll has risen to five people, with over 200 injured, including 40 in critical condition.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned the “brutality” of the act and praised emergency responders while urging the nation to stand united against hate.
The Christmas market will remain closed, with cultural institutions in Magdeburg also shutting down in solidarity with the grieving community.
Our thoughts are with all those affected by this devastating event.
