Two Presidents And A Chairman: Malta’s Representatives At Ukraine Peace Summit
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, OSCE Chairman Ian Borg, and President of Malta Myriam Spiteri Debono joined forces in yesterday’s High-Level Summit of Peace in Ukraine – a historic moment for the country with three Maltese people heading three different delegations.
“With the President of Malta Myriam Spiteri Debono @president_mt and the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola @EP_President, three Maltese among 100 leaders at the Summit on Peace in Ukraine. We are all committed to a meaningful dialogue for peace in Ukraine where sovereignty and territorial integrity are respected,” Borg wrote on X.
“Important to be in Switzerland for #UAPeaceSummit. Proud that @Europarl_EN is playing its part in efforts to find a real, just, sustainable way forward. The international community is here to send a strong signal of our unwavering support to Ukraine’s peace plan,” Metsola stated in a separate post.
Meanwhile, Spiteri Debono stated “The Maltese participants at the Summit for Peace on Ukraine together”.
Malta’s three main international figures joined each other in Switzerland alongside high-level officials and leaders from over 100 different countries and organisations from across the globe.
The aim of the summit is to set out a path toward peace between Ukraine and Russia. The two-day High-Level meeting takes place a month since President Metsola visited Kyiv, where she held meetings with President Zelenskyy and the country’s highest authorities.
Observing the attendees of the summit is important in understanding where countries stand on the war in Ukraine.
Russia sat the summit out but President Vladimir Putin laid out his terms for peace which Ukraine blasted as complete sham” and “offensive to common sense.”
The conditions are no different to Putin has already said, but for reference, he stated that Russia will only end its war in Ukraine if Kyiv surrenders the entirety of four regions claimed by Moscow and abandons its bid to join NATO.
China, which backs Russia, joined a number of countries that did not attend the conference. Beijing has said any peace conference would require the “fair and equal” participation of Russia and Ukraine.
China and Brazil agreed to six “common understandings” on a political settlement of the Ukraine crisis, that condition was one of them.
Meanwhile, The presidents of Ecuador, Ivory Coast, Kenya and Somalia joined dozens of Western heads of state, while Turkey and Saudi Arabia sent their foreign ministers and key developing countries such as Brazil, India and South Africa were represented by lower-level officials.
