Ukraine has accused Russia of blowing up a Soviet-era hydroelectric power station on Tuesday, with fears of major flooding and long-term repercussions causing mass evacuations of nearby towns.

Zelenskyy has blamed the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam, which is controlled by Russia’s occupied Southern region of Ukraine, on Russian terrorists.

”The destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant dam only confirms for the whole world that they must be expelled from every corner of Ukrainian land. Not a single meter should be left to them, because they use every meter for terror,” Zelenskyy wrote on Twitter.

He added: “All services are working. I have convened the National Security and Defense Council.”

Ukrainian residents in affected villages are being evacuated by Ukraine’s National Police Force, as written on Telegram, and urged not to use electric appliances.

Ukraine and Russia have blamed each other for the catastrophic dam explosion, which supplies water for drinking, agriculture and the cooling of the nearby Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant.

The incident has unleashed significant water flowing free through the dam and plant, with water levels five metres higher.
