Vlodymyr Zelenskyy Replaces Ukraine’s Defence Minister Following Corruption Allegations Within Ministry
Ukrainian President Vlodymyr Zelenskyy replaced the country’s defence minister, Oleskii Reznikov, a year and a half into the aggressive war.
While Reznikov was not personally accused, this development comes after the Defence Ministry was embroiled in corruption allegations.
In fact, officers within the regional recruitment office were accused of taking bribes to allow men to avoid Ukraine’s military draft.
Reznikov has played an integral role since the start of the war, attending meetings with Western allies and lobbying for additional military equipment.
Besides this, he also laid the groundwork for future NATO membership in his efforts to transform the ministry, the BBC reported.
Rustem Umerov has been appointed as Reznikov’s successor amid the president’s anti-corruption campaign which has been seen as essential to fulfil Ukraine’s desire to join Western institutions like the EU.
Umerov runs Ukraine’s State Property Fund and represented the country during peace talks held at the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
Nonetheless, experts have said that this important development is unlikely to lead to any major changes in the wartime strategy which can be described as a slow and bloody counter-offensive.
As a matter of fact, while progress is slow, top-ranking Ukrainian generals have said that their forces have broken through a critical barrier of Russian defences in the south of the region.
On the other hand, it was reported that 17 drones were drowned as a result of Russia’s 3.5-hour attack on the south of Ukraine’s Odesa region.
This assault inflicted damage in the region of Izmail which is one of two major grain-exporting ports on the Danube River in the Odesa region, thus adding a further strain on global agriculture and trade.
