Voting Underway As Mamdani Faces Cuomo For NYC Mayor
The race to become New York City’s next mayor has come down to two big names: Zohran Mamdani, the progressive rising star who shocked the establishment in June’s Democratic primary, and Andrew Cuomo, the former New York governor making a dramatic political comeback.
Cuomo launched his campaign in March, promising to “do the right thing” and rescue his hometown from crime, homelessness and subway disorder. At first, the path to Gracie Mansion seemed wide open, Cuomo led early polls with over 30% support, far ahead of the competition.
Then came what local media called an “age-quake”, a record turnout of younger voters that swept Zohran Mamdani, a self-described Democratic socialist, to victory in the Democratic primary.
Mamdani defeated Cuomo by 13 points, marking one of the most dramatic upsets in recent New York political history.
Yet, despite his growing popularity, Barack Obama has refused to officially endorse him, with sources saying the former president views him as too radical for the party establishment — much like how Donald Trump was once viewed within the Republican ranks.
Still, Mamdani’s campaign has drawn strong support from the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, with Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez both featuring prominently on his campaign trail.
In the final poll before today’s election, Mamdani led with 43.9%, compared to Cuomo’s 39.4% and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa’s 15.5%.
Despite Mamdani’s momentum, Cuomo continues to draw heavyweight backing, including public endorsements from Donald Trump and Elon Musk, both of whom have praised his “tough leadership” and “real-world pragmatism.”
