Susanna Ceccardi, the far-right Northern League mayor of Cascina, a town of 45,000 in Tuscany, has uploaded a video to Facebook where she films the scene outside Castille Square in Valletta to show how few immigrants there are in Malta.
“What you’re seeing behind me is the governmental palace of Malta,” Ceccardi opens the video. “Going round the streets of this island, you won’t even see one single refugee or illegal immigrant. I’ve been here a couple of days, I’ve walked around, I’ve spoken to some people, and they told me that here, refugees or illegal immigrants aren’t anywhere to be seen.”
The far-right mayor continued to say that all the immigrants had been “unloaded” to Italy
“This is simply because all of Europe has unloaded the barrel of immigration onto Italy,” she continued. “And because the governments of the Democratic Parties – from Letta, Renzi and Gentiloni – in reality haven’t done anything except feed the business of immigration which probably accommodated their friendly cooperations.”
She then turned to Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, her compatriot and someone who has been involved in multiple public spates with Malta.
“With Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, this political system is all but over, over, all but over, along with the sending of illegal immigrants to Italy. We have now beaten on European tables, but we’ve also beaten on Roman desks, just like previous Interior Ministers should have been doing. Instead, they’ve preferred to feed the business of immigration which probably accommodated their friendly cooperations,” she said.
She ended with a call for Europe to “wake up”
“Now, the route has been inverted, even that of rafts that leave from North Africa, and Italy is no longer disposed to being the unloading bay of all of Europe and the receptor of all the African delinquents. Therefore, Europe, wake up, that Italy, now, is here,” she said.
