Ilaria Salis, a 39-year-old Italian primary school teacher appeared in a Budapest court on 29th January with restraints on her hands and feet.

Italy has sent for Hungary’s ambassador after images of the Italian national in shackles surfaced, triggering public and political outrage.

Salis is accused of partaking in violent assaults against Neo-Nazi sympathisers in February 2023.

Following a neo-Nazi rally in Budapest, the Italian teacher, suspected to form part of an anti-fascist organisation, allegedly took part in a series of assaults on several individuals partaking in the Neo-Nazi rally.

A video portraying the anti-fascist activists kicking and beating a Hungarian, who was lying on the ground, has surfaced. The assailants are not identifiable.

Besides Salis, two German nationals were also arrested, with one pleading guilty and sentenced to three and a half years in prison.

The Italian national, who is charged with conspiracy to commit assault causing grievous bodily harm, faces 11 years in jail if convicted. She has pleaded not guilty.

Although Salis has been in prison for almost a year, her case only started gaining traction in October 2023 after her father, Roberto, publicly spoke out about a letter in which his daughter reported the harsh conditions of her detention.

In an interview with Italian outlet Repubblica, a former cellmate of the teacher reported she was intentionally being held in a cell “full of rats and insects”.

Interest in the case increased on last Monday when images of Salis shackled in court were widely shared by Italian media.

An online petition urging Salis’ return to Italy has so far garnered more than 112,000 signatures.

On Tuesday, Italian foreign minister Antonio Tajani revealed that he had summoned the Hungarian ambassador in Rome “to ask why some of the most fundamental norms on conditions of detainees were not respected”.

“I believe the security measures adopted were excessive,” Tajani told Italian media.
