The announcement was made from the central balcony of St Peter’s Basilica to a roaring crowd below, marking a historic moment for Catholics worldwide.

The newly elected pope appeared for the first time moments ago, greeting the faithful with a calm wave and his first papal blessing.

He was elected by his fellow cardinals after three rounds of voting since the start of the conclave yesterday morning.

The white smoke appeared above the Sistine Chapel at around 6.10pm and the thousands of people gathered in St Peter’s square were cheering to celebrate the election of the new pope.
