As the ongoing conflict in Israel continues to escalate into a fully-fledged war after a surprise attack by Hamas fighters this weekend, Malta’s Embassy of Palestine did not hold back in its statement.

“We have repeatedly warned against the consequences of blocking the political horizon and failing to enable the Palestinian people to exercise their legitimate right to self-determination and establish long their own state,” the embassy’s statement began. “We have also warned against the consequence of daily provocations and attacks including the continued settlers’ and occupation forces terrorism, as well as the raids on Al-Aqsa Mosque and Christian and Islamic holy sites.”

“Security, stability and peace in our region can be attained by ending the Israeli occupation of the land of the State of Palestine, with East Jerusalem as its capital, on the 1967 lines, and recognising the people’s right to independence and sovereignty.”

“Israel’s disavowal of the signed agreements and failure to adhere to international legitimacy resolutions led to the destruction of the peace process,” the embassy continued.

“That is in addition to the absence of a solution to the Palestinian cause after 75 years of suffering and displacement, the continuation of the policy of double standards, and the silence of the international community regarding the criminal and racist practices of the Israeli occupation forces against the Palestinian people, and the continuation of the injustice and oppression to which the Palestinian people are exposed is the reason behind this explosive situation and the absence of peace and security in the region.”

“Peace requires justice, freedom and independence for our Palestinian people, the return of refugees, and the full implementation of international legitimacy resolutions,” the statement finished.

On the morning of Saturday 7th October, thousands of rockets were fired into Israel from the Gaza Strip in a surprise attack by the Hamas militant group.

As air raid sirens wailed all over Tel Aviv, Israel’s defence minister said Hama had “launched a war”, with a Hamas commander saying Saturday was “the day of the greatest battle to end the last occupation on earth”.

Over 48 hours after the assault, more than 700 people have reportedly been killed, including 44 soldiers and an attack on a music festival where 260 people were reportedly found dead. Hamas has claimed it is also holding more than 100 hostages, including Israeli army officers. In retaliation, Israel has been pounding Gaza with airstrikes, formally declaring war on Hamas on Sunday. More than 400 Palestinians have died, according to the health ministry in Gaza, with medical care being further complicated after Israel reportedly cut power to the territory.
