World’s Highest Court Says Israel Needs To Prevent Acts Of Genocide In Gaza But Does Not Order Ceasefire
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has ordered Israel to take all measures within its power to prevent acts of genocide in Gaza as it continues its military campaign against Hamas but fell short of ordering a ceasefire.
The court said that Israel must take steps to improve the humanitarian situation for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and that must ensure that its military forces do not commit genocide.
This is not the final ruling of the court – it is yet to decide on the core of the case filed by South Africa that argues that Israel is committing genocide.
South Africa also requested the court order an immediate halt to Israel’s air and ground offensive that has been described as disproportionate and indiscriminate. The court did not grant that, but it recognised the right of Palestinians in Gaza to be protected from acts of genocide.
Israel argued that the court should reject the case because it has respected international law and has a right to defend itself. Meanwhile, South Africa maintains that Israel’s military operation is aimed at bringing “the destruction of the population” of Gaza.
Israel began its fast-moving rampage on 7th October after Hamas militants attacked the bordering country. Israeli officials said 1,200 people were killed, mainly civilians, and 240 were taken hostage. Meanwhile, the Gaza health authorities have said that more than 25,000 Palestinians died since this deadly campaign began.
