Zohran Mamdani has been elected as the next Mayor of New York City, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo in one of the city’s most closely watched elections in years.

The 32-year-old progressive, who made history as the first self-described Democratic socialist to win the city’s top job, secured victory with just over 50.4% of the vote, according to early projections.

Cuomo followed with around 41.6%, while Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa trailed far behind.

Mamdani’s win marks a stunning political rise for the Queens-based politician, who only a few years ago was serving as a state assemblyman. His campaign drew record numbers of young voters and focused on tackling housing inequality, public transport, and climate justice.

He will be sworn in on 1st January 2026, becoming New York City’s youngest mayor in modern history and signalling a major shift in the city’s political landscape.
