1989 Again? Ian Borg Confirms Malta Has Offered To Host Peace Talks Between Ukraine And Russia

Our tiny Mediterranean island could once again end up being at the heart of a pivotal moment in history and host global superpowers meeting for peace… or at least, the offer has been put on the table.

After a shockingly fiery meeting between the Ukrainian and American presidents yesterday which ended with Zelenskyy being kicked out of the White House and Trump warning him that he was “gambling with World War 3”, many leaders from all around the world have shown their support of Ukraine and its leader… but Malta seems to have gone one step further, and more practical.

“I have no doubt that many other countries have also made similar offers, but we are ready and willing to provide a space for talks,” Foreign Affairs Minister Ian Borg said earlier today on RTK103 with Andrew Azzopardi, confirming that Malta has offered to be the mediator for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.

Going on to remind listeners that Malta has hosted top-ranking US, Russian and Chinese officials over the past year alone, Borg went on to say he backed Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who said it was time to meet and discuss “the great challenges of today, starting with Ukraine”.

Incidentally, earlier this morning, prominent lawyer and former MP Franco Debono took his followers all the way back to December 1989, when Malta had hosted a summit between US President George H Bush and Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev, on a stormy day that went down in history as a key moment that led up to the end of the Cold War and the prevention of World War 3.

“Whoever thinks that America and Russia have to be enemies is not making sense,” Debono argued. “I’m going to make a big proposal,” he continued, calling on Prime Minister Abela, Minister Borg, and even EP President Roberta Metsola to organise a similar summit to that in 1989, this time between Trump and Putin, “but which also includes Zelensky and the representatives of Israel and Palestine”.

“I’m ready to contribute,” Debono continued. “Malta is in favour of peace. Malta is against the war. Malta is a leader in the process towards world peace.”
