Aaron Farrugia was given a €33,000 payout after being removed from cabinet during last month’s reshuffle.

According to a details obtained by Times of Malta, the former transport minister qualified for a €33,385.89 “terminal benefit”.

The benefits are paid to all cabinet members who fail to get re-elected, resign, get sacked or aren’t re-nominated to a cabinet post after an election.

Apart from this severance pay, Farrugia is reportedly being lined up as Malta’s permanent representative to the International Maritime Organisation.

Farrugia was the only minister to be removed from cabinet in January’s reshuffle which led to political discussions about this decision by the Prime Minister.

Farrugia is not the only Labour MP who qualified for this severance package as he joins Rosianne Cutajar, Justyne Caruana and former prime minister Joseph Muscat.
