‘Are Palestinian Journalists Inferior To European Ones?’ Alex Agius Saliba Calls Out EU Silence On 23 Dead In Gaza

Labour MEP Alex Agius Saliba made a damning statement, calling out the European Union for being so vocal about assassinated EU journalists but not returning the same energy to the 23 Palestinian ones that were killed in Gaza over the last few days.

“What irony and contradiction. Not only is the European Parliament still silent on this massacre but last week in a resolution about this same war, it voted against an amendment that would have led us forward to condemn the killing of Palestinian journalists in Gaza.”

“At the same time,” he continued “a few minutes later we voted on the 12th resolution that condemned, among others, the murder of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.”

The photo Agius Saliba used to accompany his post is of Mohammed Al-Salhi, the 23rd journalist killed these last few days by the Israeli military in Gaza.

“So, is the protection of journalists just a ‘chewing gum’ concept that we only use where it suits us? Does it mean that a Palestinian journalist is inferior to a European journalist?” he asked.

“Eee sorry I forgot that Metsola promised to give Israelis ‘unconditional support’.” Saliba, however, is yet to comment on statements made by Foreign Minister Ian Borg whose public stance has been similar to that of Metsola.

This is not the first time Agius Saliba has torn into the union for its stance on the Israel-Palestine war.

He called the institution “toothless” due to a resolution that was passed in Parliament condemning Hamas, recognising Israel’s right to self-defence, and calling for a humanitarian pause on the fighting. Agius Saliba said that this was unfairly one-sided towards Israel.

This action was co-financed by the European Union in the frame of the European Parliament’s grant programme in the field of communication. The European Parliament was not involved in its preparation and is, in no case, responsible for or bound by the information or opinions expressed in the context of this action. In accordance with applicable law, the authors, interviewed people, publishers or programme broadcasters are solely responsible.
