Former Italian Prime Minister Berlusconi Calls On Sardinia To Emulate Malta’s Tourism Success

Silvio Berlusconi, former Italian Prime Minister, has urged the Italian government to emulate Malta’s success in the tourism industry on Sardinia, especially given that the country is a seventh of the island’s size.

“Well, do you know how many tourists visit the island of Malta, which is 70 times smaller than Sardinia, and is incomparable with Sardinia for the beauty of the environment and for gastronomy? How much? €15,500,000,” Berlusconi said during an interview on Canale 5 yesterday.

The 82-year-old was speaking ahead of next week’s regional vote on the island, where Berlusconi owns a second-residence, while also continuing his campaigning for an MEP in the upcoming elections this May.

Malta’s tourism figures have rapidly grown from less than 1.2 million in 2009 to around 2.6 million in 2018, contributing significantly to the country’s economic growth, particularly in the construction industry.

The Forza Italia leader, who is making his first attempt in a election since he was found guilty on tax charges, paying an underage prostitute for sex, and abusing his powers to cover-up the scandal, used his speaking opportunity to lambast the ruling Five-Star Movement, describing the coalition partners of his former allies (The League) as the most “incredible, absurd and dangerous government in the history of Italy”, adding that they behaved like “kindergarten children”.

Berlusconi is part of the ever growing community of former and current EU Leaders who has been steadfast in their praise of Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, who has been tipped for a top EU post after he steps down as PM during this legislature.
