Bernard Grech Says Government Is Hiding True Population Numbers
Opposition leader Bernard Grech has said that the government is hiding the true numbers of Malta’s population, Malta Today reported.
He allegedly said that there are two possible situations: either the government is hiding the real number, or it does not know how many people are entering and leaving the country.
The PN leader spoke during the debate on the Budget estimates of the Office of the Prime Minister. He further claimed that overpopulation is the root of all of the islands’ problems.
He stated that the population has nearly doubled since 2013 and that is because “for this government, the importation of foreign workers is the only solution to its shortcomings in the economic sectors”.
Grech further said that a number of Malta’s sectors are increasingly flawed, bringing up a case wherein an elderly woman had her operation cancelled after she was prepped for it.
He also spoke of a woman who told the opposition leader that she is afraid to get on the bus because of the high number of foreigners. As well as the case of an LSE who complained to Grech that most of her students are foreign.
He further highlighted that citizens remain stuck in traffic despite the government’s €700 million investment in infrastructure.
“The government is without a plan.”
Grech further called for the resignation of Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo from the PAC in light of him being caught passing on a rough draft of his questions to economist Gordon Cordina ahead of his testifying in front of the committee.
