The Birkirkara local council is set to hold a another meeting tonight to decide on the town’s mayoral leadership. A move that could determine whether current mayor Deserei Grech continues in her role or if new leadership will be appointed.

Grech, who has served as mayor for the past year and three months, said she remains committed to providing stable and serious leadership for one of Malta’s largest localities.

In a statement ahead of the meeting, she thanked councillors who have contributed actively to the council’s work and urged all members to take part in every discussion — not just during votes.

“Birkirkara needs everyone’s contribution to keep moving forward,” Grech said, stressing the importance of collaboration and respect within the council.

She also reaffirmed her position, noting that as the candidate who received the highest number of votes from the party that holds the council majority, she has both the right and responsibility to continue leading Birkirkara.

“The law is clear, and the will of the people must be respected,” she said.

“Birkirkara deserves continuity, respect, and vision — and I will remain here to guarantee that.”
