BREAKING: Arnold Cassola Quits Alternattiva Demokratika After Abortion Feud

Former Alternativa Demokratika leader and current MEP candidate Arnold Cassola has resigned from the party, citing concerns about its stance on abortion.

In an email to AD leader Carmel Cacopardo, Cassola reiterated his opposition to abortion except in cases where the mother’s life is at risk, but said his view is clearly not shared by the majority of the party’s executive.

“I therefore think it would be better for AD to be free to take decisions without my minority position hindering them,” he said. “With great sadness, I am therefore submitting my resignation from AD. After 30 wonderful years, my adventure with AD ends today.”

The dispute started a few days ago when the green party’s MEP candidate Mina Tolu criticised the taboo surrounding the abortion debate in Malta, warning it is breeding stigma and harming many.

Cassola initially responded by writing an open email to the party’s secretary general, in which he publicly disassociated herself from the candidate’s stance and urged AD to unequivocally state that it is against abortion.

However, AD leader Carmel Cacopardo responded that Cassola’s position against abortion, except in cases where the mother’s life is at risk, is a proposal and not the party’s official stance.

“The party has never adopted this position, as you well know, but I appreciate your contribution to this discussion and the contents of your email will be discussed at our next executive council meeting.”
