‘Do Not Defend The Indefensible’: David Casa To Possible Candidates Who Will Take Fearne’s Place

Malta’s longest-standing MEP, David Casa, has released a message to the people that may take Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne’s post as candidate for the European Commission.
“There are people being mentioned who could replace Fearne as a candidate for the European Commission. To these I say: Do not defend the indefensible,” Casa wrote on social media.

“Do not let anyone use you in this heinous attack against the judiciary and against democracy. Because even their candidacy will be polluted.”
This comes amid the news that Fearne and Central Bank Governor Edward Schicluna will be charged with fraud and misappropriation for their role in the Vitals scandal following the conclusion of the inquiry.
The crimes they are accused of committing carry a potential prison sentence of up to 12 and a half years.
This news comes amid a political storm wherein ex-prime minister Joseph Muscat will also be criminally charged for more serious offences such as corruption, bribery, and money laundering.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Robert Abela has accused the magistrate for purposely concluding the inquiry during an electoral season to interfere with campaigns. He has stood by this statement, as have others from his party, despite widespread criticism. This includes a powerful protest held last night by numerous student organisations, primarily GħSL. Several politicians have come out in support of the students including European Parliament President Roberta Metsola and Opposition Leader Bernard Grech who said:
“We attended a protest in solidarity with the Judiciary organised by GħSL. Thanks to the GħSL and the youth and student associations for speaking in favor of justice in our country.”
“We are witnessing a moment of national unity in favor of justice and democracy in our country.”
