Marlene and Godfrey Farrugia have announced their resignation from Partit Demokratiku, leaving many wondering what is in the future for what was once Malta’s third-largest party.

The two founding members, who have played a critical role in the growth of PD, tendered their immediate resignation this morning, saying they took the joint decision “in the spirit of loyalty towards Malta and Gozo first and foremost.”

“We feel that what is most needed in our democratic country right now is to ensure that the rule of law and social justice remain the main pillars in the politics that run this country,” the Farrugias said.

Timothy Alden has reportedly temporarily taken over as deputy leader of the party.

The statement was shared with a link to the song November by Max Richter.

While they were resigning from PD themselves, they called on other politicians to get involved and to “develop” the party before the next General Election.

They pledged to stay on as MPs until the end of this legislature following which neither of them will seek to contest another election again.

What do you think of the future of Partit Demokratiku?
