Former Minister Justyne Caruana Earning €78,000 In Controversial Tax Advisory Role
Former minister Justyne Caruana, who resigned twice amidst scandals, is currently earning €78,000 annually as an advisor for the Malta Tax and Customs Administration (MTCA).
As reported by Times of Malta, Caruana has been in the role since July, working 30-hour weeks under a 12-month contract that pays €50 per hour.
The appointment, which falls under the Ministry of Finance, was disclosed in the Government Gazette yesterday, months after her contract began.

Caruana’s position comes in addition to her private legal practice. Meanwhile, speculation about her potential return to politics has been fuelled by Prime Minister Robert Abela, who recently praised her publicly during a Labour Party event.
Caruana’s continued employment has sparked criticism, particularly in light of her controversial past.
In 2021, she resigned as Education Minister after a job-for-a-friend scandal, where she was found to have awarded a €15,000 contract to her friend and former footballer Daniel Bogdanovich when a report by the Standards Commissioner concluded she had breached ethics.
Her first resignation occurred in 2020, when she stepped down as Gozo Minister following revelations that her then-husband, former Deputy Police Commissioner Silvio Valletta, went on holiday with Yorgen Fenech, the man accused of complicity in Daphne Caruana Galizia’s murder.
