WATCH: Former Prime Minister’s Ringing Endorsement Of MEP David Casa: ‘Malta Needs A Shield’

Former Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi has publicly endorsed PN MEP David Casa for re-election to the European Parliament, describing him as “the natural choice for Maltese voters”.

“David has always been loyal, consistent and firm in his values and principles and is the ideal person to represent those values which are typically associated with the Nationalist Party,” Gonzi said in a video message that Casa uploaded onto his Facebook page.

“We are living in hard times and we need people to defend us…a shield of Malta, if you will. We need someone with a strong, firm and credible voice who can speak out in EU institutions about what’s going on in our country. This way, we will be able to restore our repute, something which is so integral to the Maltese identity.”

“I urge all voters to opt for those candidates who correspond with the values we believe in. David Casa should be the natural choice of our voters.”

Gonzi’s endorsement comes at a crucial juncture for Casa, who has been an MEP since 2004 but who is at serious risk of losing his seat in a month’s time.

His harsh criticism of the Maltese government and authorities in the European Parliament has led the Labour Party to accuse him of attacking and undermining Malta overseas. Moreover, several PN voters remain sceptical of his loyalty to Opposition leader Adrian Delia.

The Labour Party is widely expected to clinch one of the PN’s three seats and surveys indicate that PN MEP Roberta Metsola will reclaim her seat by a comfortable margin.

This means that the PN’s second seat could well be a race between Casa and NET TV journalist Frank Psaila, who was the PN’s communications director under Gonzi’s leadership of the party.

This race between Casa and Psaila is also being seen internally as an acid test on how PN voters view Opposition leader Adrian Delia. While Psaila is pitching himself as a Delia loyalist, Casa is very much admired by traditional PN voters who want a new leader in charge.

A recent survey by Lovin Malta has Psaila at 4.9% of the vote, with Casa at 3.1%.
