GħSL ‘Unequivocally Denounce’ Robert Abela’s Attack On Judiciary
Malta’s Law University students group (GħSL) have “unequivocally denounced” the Prime Minster’s recent statements condemning and attacking the judiciary.
Abela raised suspicion about the inquiring magistrate and insinuated that the timing of the conclusions will disrupt the MEP elections and cast doubt on the magistrate’s impartiality.
“The inquiring magistrate is not obliged to conclude the magisterial inquiry after 60 days, but rather to inform the AG after 60 days,” GħSL stated.
“GħSL asserts that such rhetoric is in direct violation of the ministerial code of ethics and constitutes a direct assault on the integrity of the judiciary. Our consistent warnings against such discourse remain steadfast, and we eagerly await the report from the Commissioner for Standards in Public Life concerning similar rhetoric by the Prime Minister,” the group added to their statement.
The group urged the highest government officials to stop “undermining the pillars of democracy and the principles of separation of powers”.
