Factories in Ħal Far are under investigation for emitting excessive smoke following a complaint by parliamentary secretary Julia Farrugia Portelli.

Farrugia Portelli said on Friday that several Birżebbuġia residents have complained to her that smoke emissions from the nearby factories have increased drastically, damaging their throats in the process.

After she personally asked Environment Minister Jose Herrera to commence an investigation, the Environment and Resources (ERA) confirmed with It-Torċa that it had immediately sent enforcement officers to check out the situation.

“I didn’t get into politics to warm the seat, but to give residents a voice, even on unpleasant stories,” Farrugia Portelli said. “I welcome this immediate action by the Environment Minister and ERA… and I look forward to the outcome of this investigation.”
