Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri Offers Resignation After Stolen Drugs Scandal At AFM Property

Minister for Home Affairs, Security, and Work Byron Camilleri has offered his resignation following a shocking incident involving the theft of drugs stored on army property.
The news emerged after Camilleri revealed that a container holding drugs, initially seized at the Freeport, was broken into at a location managed by the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM).
In a statement shared on social media, Camilleri explained that the request to store the drugs at a Ministry for Home Affairs site came from the Court Agency. This request arose due to an industrial dispute at the Freeport, where the drugs had been held since their seizure in June 2024.
“I was informed by the Permanent Secretary that discussions would be held with the Brigadier of the Armed Forces of Malta. However, I was not updated on the outcome of these discussions or any conclusions reached,” Camilleri said.
The incident came to light this morning when the Police Commissioner informed the minister that the drugs had been stolen from the container.
According to Camilleri, the container was kept in an area with security cameras and periodic patrols. However, despite these measures, thieves managed to break into the container overnight. The theft was only discovered during a routine inspection.
Those on duty reportedly did not notice any suspicious activity, raising serious concerns about the security protocols in place.
The police are now investigating the incident under the direction of an Inquiring Magistrate.
In response to the situation, Camilleri requested the suspension of the AFM Brigadier pending a full investigation.
He stressed the need to establish whether all necessary steps and precautions were taken to secure the drugs appropriately.
“I also communicated with the Prime Minister and offered my resignation,” Camilleri said. “Even if I had no role in the decision-making or its implementation, I believe that this is the right and honourable course of action.”
He added: “I am taking this step because I feel that this is a serious matter. However, I do so with great serenity, as public life for me has always been solely about serving the public.”
The Prime Minister has yet to publicly respond to Camilleri’s resignation offer. Meanwhile, the police investigation into the drug theft continues.
