An environmental activist who was accused of personally attacking Transport Minister Ian Borg after a post of his included an image of the minister and his young daughter has clarified what his intentions were.

I wanted to highlight the fact that the negative impacts of this project will be felt by everyone,” Robert Louis Fenech told Lovin Malta.

“Ministers and their children breathe the same air we breathe,” he continued. “We need to think of our future generations because our actions will affect them. All of us, and especially those who hold power, have a responsibility to safeguard the environment, not because of anything abstract, but because our health and safety depend on it.”

Fenech came under fire from certain sections of the Labour camp after he posted a critical message of the controversial Central Link Project. In the post, he included an image of Ian Borg and his baby daughter – a post he has since taken down.

“I took the post down because I don’t want the point of the protest to be sidelined.
I want the focus to remain the trees, the land lost, the families affected, and our health, which will be negatively affected for years to come by this short-sighted project,” he pointed out.

Indeed, he says the focus of his post wasn’t even Ian Borg or his daughter

“I said his daughter will regret his decisions like our children will regret ours unless we stand up,” he said.
“I am not even attacking him personally, I am attacking his short-sighted decisions that will lead to an environmental and health impact that will be felt by everyone,” he continued. “We are all responsible for creating a better world for the next generation – and his responsibility is greater than most.”

Though he deleted the post to minimise drama and distraction from this Sunday’s proposed protest, he isn’t letting this incident stop him from continuing the fight.

“By all accounts, the next few years will be crucial for long term survival and happiness, due to the challenges of a changing climate,” he said. “Ian Borg has had the opportunity to do his part, as Minister for Infrastructure, in the creation of this better world. However, he has, time and time again, wasted these chances, refusing to accommodate alternative modes of transport and respect the existing environment. For this, our children, all of them, will suffer from his poor judgement.”
“Therefore, I will be attending the protest organised this coming Sunday, and I invite everyone to do the same,” he ended.
