Ian Borg Says That He Just Tries To ‘Help’ People With Complaints, In Response To Scandal Revelations
Former Transport Minister and current Minister for Foreign Affairs responded to the driver’s license racket revelation allegations by stating that he was just trying to “help” people, following allegations of corruption.
“Go through my messages with Transport Malta (TM) and what do they show? I listen to people’s complaints and work on them,” Borg wrote on his social media.
Earlier today, Times of Malta revealed a driving license racket and alleged that the Transport Ministry under Borg was putting pressure on TM to help candidates obtain driving licenses.
WhatsApp chats acquired by the Times of Malta are claimed to show OPM officials connecting the practice to wanting to win votes.
However, both Borg and Prime Minister Robert Abela have insisted that the government was just trying to help people with their complaints.
“I am proud that I have always been and still am accessible to all. Everyone talks to me – from young people with various problems, to archpriests, many commercial companies from Ħaż-Żebbuġ to Nadur, as well as Hon. Beppe Fenech Adami
“The people I mentioned above, and hundreds of others like them, did not ask for anything against the law, much less me or the secretariat that brought us their complaints.”
He went on to say that he believes that the authority acted fairly while being certain that examiners only passed candidates that deserved it, “as they testified in the courts.”
More chats allegedly revealed that Borg, his canvasser, and his ministry regularly applied pressure on TM’s director of licensing Clint Mansueto to help candidates with their tests, some of whom came from Borg’s electoral districts.
In fact, Mansueto was charged alongside two clerks with corruption; they all deny the claims.
“The customer care staff was mentioned a lot. I thank them for that when I was responsible for Transport, they gave an excellent service to everyone who spoke to them.”
“We need to continue listening and working on people’s complaints,” he concluded.
In response to the revelation, several local politicians and activists called for Borg’s resignation, while Abela defended him.
