It Looks Like Malta’s Next Labour Leader Might Be More In Tune With Jeremy Corbyn Than The Current One

Although they both lead Labour parties, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has gone on record saying he has practically nothing in common with his British counterpart Jeremy Corbyn.

“We basically disagree about everything,” Muscat, who describes himself as being socially leftist but economically rightist, told Lovin Malta a few years ago after having dinner with Corbyn.

Yet, with Muscat having promised not to seek a third term as Prime Minister, the internal leadership race to replace him as Labour leader has started picking up steam.

One of the current frontrunners is Health Minister and deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne, a surgeon who is seen as more traditionally socialist than Muscat.

And he certainly appears to see eye to eye with Corybn, beaming in a sweaty gym photo with the UK Labour leader in Liverpool, where he is leading a PL delegation to the UK Labour Party’s annual general conference.

“Early morning gym workout with Jeremy Corbyn at Labour Conference 2018,” he said on his Instagram page.

PL executive secretary Lydia Abela, whose husband Robert Abela has also been tipped to succeed Muscat, also uploaded a photo of herself at the gym with Corbyn.

“Great way to start the day this morning,” she said.

It now remains to be seen whether Malta’s Labour Party will go the way of their British counterparts and shift to the left when the time comes to find Muscat’s successor.
