‘It’s Great To See Her Back’: Roberta Metsola Congratulates PL’s Claudette Abela Baldacchino On MEP Announcement

Claudette Abela Baldacchino is returning to politics and will contest the upcoming MEP elections with PL again… and despite their political differences, PN’s Roberta Metsola has welcomed the announcement, congratulating her and saying more women need to “put themselves forward”.

“Claudette and I, together with Marlene Mizzi, have the honour of being elected as Malta’s first women MEPs, and it is great to see her get back into the political arena,” Metsola told Lovin Malta in an exclusive comment when asked to comment on yesterday’s announcement.

Metsola, Mizzi and Abela Baldacchino jointly became Malta’s first women MEPs back in 2013, co-opting seats from Simon Busuttil, Joseph Muscat and Louis Grech following the national election.

When she had returned to Malta, Abela Baldacchino also served as the president of Nisa Laburisti for four years.

“Many of the cracks we see in the glass ceiling are also because of her efforts,” Metsola went on to say of Abela Baldacchino. “We shared some important moments and challenges since our first election and while we come from different sides of the political divide, I wish her well.”

Abela Baldacchino’s husband Kevin took to social media yesterday to make the announcement, saying Prime Minister Robert Abela and the Labour Party had “asked her to give her contribution” in the June elections. “I give her my full support because I know very well just how much she loves the people and how hard she fights to the improve the lives of the vulnerable,” he continued.

“We need more women to put themselves forward,” Metsola finished in her statement to Lovin Malta.
