Bernard Grech resigned as Opposition Party leader moments ago in a press conference streamed on NET News.

In response to the news, the PN General Secretary Charles Bonello thanked him for his service on behalf of the party and published Grech’s formal resignation letter.

This is the full letter:

Dear Charles,

Out of a strong sense of duty and loyalty to the Nationalist Party and to the Maltese and Gozitan people, I am writing to officially inform you of my decision to resign from the role of Leader of the Nationalist Party.

This is a difficult decision, but one taken with the conviction that the time has come for the Nationalist Party to begin a new chapter in its leadership. It has been a privilege and a great honour for me to serve the Party as its Leader for the past five years—years of great challenges but also of significant moments filled with hope and achievement.

During this journey, together with my colleagues and activists, I took steps forward to help the Party achieve political results in the European Parliament and Local Council elections. Today, I look back with a sense of gratitude and satisfaction, even as I look ahead with hope toward everything we can still achieve as a political force for the good of our country.

Therefore, in order to ensure a smooth and orderly transition, I am informing you that I am calling a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Nationalist Party for tomorrow, in line with the Party Statute, to formally initiate the process for appointing a new Leader. I will continue to serve in the role until my successor is officially appointed, and I promise to give them my full support and unwavering loyalty.

I thank you personally for your support and ongoing collaboration, as well as all the Party members who have been with me on this journey of service.

Always yours,
Bernard Grech.

Grech has also called a meeting of the Executive Committee of the PN for tomorrow to immediately begin the formal process of appointing a new leader in accordance with the Party’s statute.

The party went on to express its appreciation for Grech’s five years of leadership “years marked by challenges and tireless work to rebuild and strengthen the Party.”

“During this time, the Partit Nazzjonalista witnessed renewal within the Parliamentary Group, notable electoral achievements, and a deepened commitment to the public.”

Who do you think should be the next leader of the Nationalist Party?
