PN MP Janice Chetucti has confirmed she doesn’t intend to contest the upcoming deputy leadership election.

“Many people have been calling me up to tell me to go for it but I don’t think it’s the right time,” Chetcuti told Lovin Malta.

“I will be where the party needs me but I’m not contesting.”

She said her decision has got nothing to do with the recent incident regarding magistrate Yana Micallef Stafrace, who had compared Chetcuti to a prostitute for embracing her cousin in court. However, said she has “no doubt” the story came out due to murmurings that she planned to contest.

Chetcuti, a former Marsaxlokk councillor who was elected to Parliament for the first time last March, was being widely spoken about within PN circles as a potential deputy leader.

With the deadline for nominations closing tomorrow, not a single person has come forward to contest the deputy leadership, although incumbent deputy leader David Agius and MP Graziella Galea have both kept the door open.

Lovin Malta is also informed that other MPs are seriously considering contesting the role but haven’t taken a decision yet.

Although the party currently has two deputy leaders, recent changes in its statute mean it will have a single deputy leader, who will be elected via the party’s councillors.
