Joseph Muscat Has No Plans To Buy His Own Electric Car Despite Ambitious Plans For Malta
Prime Minister Joseph Muscat wants Malta to become one of the first European countries to fully transition to electric vehicles, but has no immediate plans to become an early adopter himself.
Contacted by Lovin Malta, a spokesperson for Muscat confirmed such a vehicular switch has not yet been internally discussed.
“The Prime Minister procured a brand new Alfa Romeo right after the 2017 election and has no immediate plans to switch to an electric car,” he said.
The Maltese government plans to introduce a cut-off date between 2025 and 2028 for the importation of petrol and diesel cars.
While cars which run on diesel and petrol will not be banned from the streets, all cars purchased after this cut-off date will have to be electric or hybrid vehicles
Muscat yesterday said he wants local councils with a PL majority to be at the forefront of these changes and to only procure electric vehicles in the upcoming legislature. He also confirmed local councils will be asked to help the central government to install charging points for electric cars across the country.
He has also said that he wants the electric car revolution to start in Gozo, with the cut-off date for the importation of diesel and petrol cars in Gozo set earlier than that of Malta.
