Labour Candidate Cyrus Engerer: ‘The Ray Of Hope I Saw In 2011 Has Now Been Corrupted’

Labour MEP candidate Cyrus Engerer has called for drastic changes within Malta’s political system, warning Maltese people are being ingrained with a subservient attitude.

“We have been ingrained with a subservient attitude. It could be the result of the fear we’re brainwashed with since we’re children by a church that never wanted us to question, a religion that speaks of ‘us’ and ‘them’, ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, only ‘black’ and ‘white’,” Engerer wrote on Facebook in the wake of the news that the Prime Minister’s now-former chief of staff Keith Schembri is being interrogated by the police.

“It could be the mentality passed on through generations in a small peripheral island state ruled by successive rulers, where citizens were expected to simply view the ruler as king, invincible and as the person who gives orders which everyone must obey.”

“In 2011 I saw a ray of hope. I believed. It has now been corrupted, but I know that the flame is still burning in the hearts of those of my generation (in thought), not only out there but also within the Labour Party. The choice is ours. I’ve made mine.”

Engerer said he wants Malta to become a country where criticism is exalted and not attacked and where people don’t look at issues through their ingrained dogmas but evaluate what’s at hand according to their core inner beliefs.

“Why has it become the norm for people to say that something is wrong because their opposing clan is doing it, but then becomes right when your own do the same?”

“Has our education system failed? Are we going to school, college and university and be expected to simply copy and paste from text books on to our exam sheets? Why do university students feel that professors orgasm when you repeat their words in an exam paper rather than when offering an argument based on their own logic and research.”

“Why do our young people fear of speaking out what they believe is true because of repercussions on their present or future employment? Do employers (entrepreneurs, shop owners, government departments, politicians) prefer those who remain silent or those who are bold, creative and able to speak their mind to better their society, business or office?

Shouldn’t it be the youth in every society to rebel against the status quo and always push for more change? Don’t be afraid to speak out, even if your voice trembles!”

“It’s time to take stock of where we are as a nation. Recent events have shown that we need to change. We need to change our political system.
We need to change our constitution. We need to change our electoral system. We need to change the way people believe in themselves.”
