The Labour Party is strengthening its lead over the Nationalist Party, a Malta Today survey found.

However, both registered a decrease in points from last month while an increase in support for third parties was recorded.

The survey was carried out between 28th November and 6th December and garnered 650 respondents. It utilised stratified random sampling based on region, gender, and age.

According to the findings, PL is supported by 47.3% of respondents – a decrease of 1.7 points from November – while the PN enjoys the support of 43.1% – a decrease of 2.3 points.

Despite the decrease from both sides, Labour has widened its lead to 4.2 points now, recording a 0.6-point increase from November.

Based on a voter turnout of 69.8%, this equates to a numerical increase of 10,352 votes, an improvement from the 8,827 votes recorded last month. The turnout refers to the proportion of valid votes cast in relation to the total number of eligible voters.

Moreover, the findings show that Labour has lost a significant amount of support since the last General Election in 2022 when it enjoyed a 14-point lead. However, the survey also confirms PL’s post-budget recovery after a survey in October showed PN in the lead.

The percentage of non-voters has remained around the same percentage as the last survey – 30.2% – as support for third parties grew from 5.6% in November to 9.6% now.

Meanwhile, 33.9% of 2022 Labour voters will not vote if an election is held now – this is up from 26% last month. On the other hand, the PN lost 2.1% of its voters from last month with the government retaining 60.3% of its 2022 voters and the PN retaining 64.7%.

Furthermore, 5.4% of Labour voters from the last general election switched to PN, while 3.6% of the opposition party voters switched to Labour.

Ultimately, both parties are showing a loss.

When it comes to trust in leaders, the majority of respondents said they trust neither of the two political leaders – Prime Minister Robert Abela and Opposition Leader Bernard Grech.

While Abela led Grech in all regions but neither trumped them in four regions Northern Harbour (38.1%), the Western region (47%), the Northern region (42.4%) and Gozo (49.2%).
