‘Malicious Manoeuvres’ Prohibiting Rabat Mayor From Running In Local Council Elections

Labour Party Rabat Mayor Charles Azzopardi has claimed that malicious manoeuvres are behind an anonymous report designed to damage his reputation and justify his party’s decision to block him from running in the upcoming local council elections.

Speaking on social media, Azzopardi claimed that the councillor who even authored the report with the initials ‘E.D’ did not even exist, with all Rabat councillors denying they were behind the document.

He added that the financial operators and auditors have found no anomalies.

Azzopardi said that the PL made the “hasty decision” to prohibit his candidature following a rushed report into his conduct.

“Why was I good for the 2017 general election and not good for the 2019 local council election,” he said, given that the report covered the council’s operations between 2014 and 2017.

A CID officer visited the Rabat council in September 2018 to investigate its financial operations, however, Azzopardi said nothing has developed since.

His reply to the report was left unanswered by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, Justice Minister Owen Bonnici, PS for Local Councils Silvio Parnis, the Governance Board, the director general of local councils and the Auditor General until Parnis met him a few months later.

Azzopardi has been featured in the news recently over his public opposition to the proposed developments on Saqqajja Hill; and his outspoken comments regarding the PL.
