Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced that Malta is set to benefit from €500 million in investments between this year and the next, in a major economic pledge made during the Labour Party’s Workers’ Day mass meeting in Valletta.

Addressing a packed Merchants Street, Abela praised the Maltese and Gozitan workforce for driving the country forward, calling them the backbone of the nation’s progress. “While others try to downplay the incredible achievements made through unity and hard work, we look ahead — to the success of today and the promise of tomorrow,” he said.

The Prime Minister confirmed that investments totalling half a billion euro will be finalised over the next two years, with major expansions from companies such as ST Micro Electronics, Baxter, Lufthansa Technik, Magro Brothers, Actavis, James Caterers, and Gimas. These projects are expected to generate high-quality careers in strategic sectors like digital technology, clean energy, pharmaceuticals, advanced manufacturing, medical devices, and financial services.

“This aligns with our Malta 2050 Vision,” Abela continued, “which is about balancing economic progress with social justice. Every investment we attract must lead to a better quality of life for our people. Today, we have the luxury to choose which investments truly serve our country’s interests.”

The announcement formed part of a broader showcase of Labour’s recent efforts and upcoming plans. These include ongoing tax cuts, social investment, and collective agreements — including an imminent signing of a new agreement for MCAST lecturers.

Abela also confirmed that Malta’s Labour Migration Policy is now moving into its implementation phase, with a focus on sustainability and skills matching.

In addition, the government will begin rolling out its promise of six months of free gym access for youths born in 2005, 2006, and 2007 starting this Sunday. On the social front, adjustments to pensions for those born before 1962 will continue, targeting the elimination of discriminatory systems introduced under previous administrations.

As part of the cost-of-living support package, families will receive their second additional benefit payment this June — with eligible households receiving up to €1,500 annually. Altogether, nearly €50 million will be distributed through this scheme in 2025 alone.

Closing his speech, Abela reaffirmed Labour’s identity as the workers’ movement. “We will continue delivering for all Maltese and Gozitan families. Through work, we will keep building prosperity — for everyone.”
