Malta’s Prime Minister And EP President Roberta Metsola Honour Ukraine On Its Independence Day

Today marks Ukraine’s national Independence Day, six months after Russia invaded the country. And both European Parliament President Roberta Metsola and Prime Minister Robert Abela have honoured the country, promising to uphold support of the country and its people.

“The EU will keep supporting Ukraine: not only to defend itself against the aggressor, but also to ensure a free and independent future, for all of us,” Metsola said in an Instagram post paired with a photo of her in Kyiv back in April.

War against Ukraine was first waged by the Russian government six months ago – with the rest of the globe raising alarm over the threat to the sovereignty of the European country. This day has now become all the more significant.

“Today we celebrate Ukraine’s Independence Day. A day that will now forever represent the courage, the resilience and the determination of a people fighting against impossible odds. The dignity of a nation that refuses to give in,” Metsola said.

“Six months ago, war returned to Europe. Brave Ukrainians have been fighting to protect their country, their values and their freedoms. Our values, our freedoms.”

“They fight to protect Ukraine’s independence. To protect their right to make its own choices. To choose their own destiny, “ she continued.

Meanwhile, Abela posted a slightly shorter tribute to Ukraine on his twitter.

“On Ukraine’s independence day, our will to stay united and restore peace in Ukraine remains strong. Malta stands with its partners, continues to show solidarity and offers humanitarian aid to the Ukrainian people – RA.”

Ukrainian and US officials have warned that Russia may use this day as a show of force, the New York Times explained.

Officials are concerned at the possibility of missile attacks in response to a string of Ukrainian reactions and assaults on Russian military targets in Crimea. There have also been speculations that Ukraine killed a hawkish commentator, thus increasing hostility.

In response, Ukraine has tightened its security. Officers are spreading throughout the streets and big celebrations have been cancelled. Citizens have also been urged to pay particular attention to air-raid sirens, which, according to the NY Times, many people residing in cities far from the front have begun to ignore.

Regarding Nuclear news, the UN Security Council held an emergency meeting to discuss the conflict occurring close to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant. A path forward to avoid a nuclear disaster remains unclear.
