Maltese MEP David Casa Gains More Power In The European Parliament

Nationalist MEP David Casa has been elected as one of the European Parliament’s five quaestors, a role that involves the supervision of financial and administrative matters involving MEPs, including their budgets.
“I am honoured to have been entrusted to take on this role,” Casa said. “This is now my fourth parliamentary term and I am ready for the increased responsibility that comes with forming part of the Parliament’s Bureau.”
“My election is also testament to the fact that despite coming from a small member state, Maltese nationals can achieve positions of significant clout within European institutions.”

He added that he now holds the highest-ranking European Parliament post ever secured by a Maltese MEP.
Each parliamentary group nominated two MEPs to the role of quaestor, with Casa nominated by the European People’s Party, and he was elected following a vote in Strasbourg this morning. He will serve in that role for the next two and a half years.
His election comes two days after Prime Minister Joseph Muscat failed to get elected as European Council president, a role he had openly been seeking. Muscat’s name was barely referred to in the international coverage of the election for the top EU jobs, but his spokesperson Kurt Farrugia said he came “very close” to landing the top job.
