Despite their differences in the past, PD leader Marlene Farrugia called on Labour voters to pick Helena Dalli as their new deputy leader.

Taking time from her speech during the debate on the newly tabled Marriage Equality Bill (which Farrugia openly praised), the Orange Party MP urged PL to “make history again, and vote for the first woman to run for deputy leader”.

“Don’t vote for her simply because she is a woman, but vote because she is a capable woman.”

Farrugia also implied the famous Labour slogan applies specifically to the minister, saying ‘you don’t have to agree with [Dalli], but you can work with her’.

Despite unilateral agreement on the concept of gay marriage, the Bill’s debate still saw some firm resistance from Nationalist MPs, with the David Agius, the PN whip and spokesperson for Civil Liberties and Youths, going so far as to claim that the Bill would stop people referring to their parents as ‘ma’ and ‘pa’. He also implied that people would stop celebrating Mother’s Day.

Contrary to this Marlene Farrugia stated that she has “never felt more Christian than [she does] right now”.

Minister Helena Dalli, who put forward the Marriage Equality Bill, has said she is looking forward to making leaps forward in civil liberties, and that this Bill represents the platform of love and equality the government represents.

She will be contesting against Chris Fearne and Edward Scicluna for the position of Deputy Leader of the Labour Party.
