Metsola Congratulates Myriam Spiteri Debono And Francis Zammit Dimech In Touching Post
Malta’s third female president, as well as her acting president, was officially announced yesterday and President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola couldn’t be more pleased.
Former Labour candidate Myriam Spiteri Debono,72, will be replacing George Vella whose term ends on 4th April.
Meanwhile, long-time Nationalist politician Francis Zammit Dimech will serve as the acting president.
The acting president assumes the president’s duties whenever the president is abroad or in case she is unable to run her office due to health problems.
In honour of the news, Metsola penned a touching social media post, congratulating the two and calling them “beacons of a political class that works with integrity”.
“Myriam Spiteri Debono and Francis Zammit Dimech epitomise experience, seriousness, and integrity. Two individuals who have worked in the interest of Malta and Gozo in their public life,” she wrote on Facebook.
“As a young person interested in politics, I remember following Myriam Spiteri Debono in her role as Speaker of Parliament. Her sense of calm and maturity were crucial during turbulent times in the Maltese Parliament.”
“I know Francis more closely. A friend, genuine, and someone who loves his country. For us youths, he was an example of how politicians should be. I’ll never forget the two years we worked closely as colleagues in the European Parliament.”
The agreement to appoint Zammit Dimech and Spiteri Debono occurred yesterday following weeks of indecision. Finally, the two party leaders were able to reach an agreement during negotiations and just in time before Vella’s term ends during the week of Easter.
