New political party Momentum has requested an investigation into Prime Minister Robert Abela, every minister, and every Parliamentary Secretary in the Cabinet for not submitting their declaration of assets for 2023.

Arnold Cassola – the leader of Momentum, penned a request to the Standards Commissioner for an investigation into a “breach of ethics”.

Cassola noted that the members of the Cabinet were required to submit their declaration of assets for 2023 by March 2024 and present them on the table of the House of Representatives.

“This has not been done, and they are now nearly a year overdue.”

“Their negligence demonstrates an arrogant disregard for transparency and the citizens,” he concluded.

Nationalist MP Karol Aquilina called for a parliamentary ruling on the issue of declarations that have not been tabled earlier this week. In response, Speaker Anglu Farrugia said he could not order the Prime Minister to table them.

Farrugia said that the government isn’t obligated by law to adhere to the practice of tabling the Cabinet’s declaration of assets. However, he did note that other Maltese Prime Ministers tended to submit the declarations annually, with there having been only three occasions in the last thirty years when such declarations were not tables.

Those occurred in 2001, 2005 and 2007.

How do you think the Standard’s Commissioner should respond to Momentum’s request?
