Nickie Vella de Fremeaux Turned Down Offer To Contest 2014 MEP Elections

Many people know Nickie Vella de Fremeaux as the wife of Opposition leader Adrian Delia, but what few people know is that she had turned down a chance to carve out a political career in her own right.

In an interview with Lovin Malta, Vella de Fremeaux confirmed that former PN leader Simon Busuttil had personally asked her to contest the 2014 European Parliament elections.

“I turned the offer down because I didn’t want to leave my children and because I didn’t want to leave Malta,” she said. “My family comes first for me and the offer was made to me at a time when I couldn’t or shouldn’t have left my children.”

The PN lost that election by around 34,000 votes but managed to elect three MEPs – Roberta Metsola, David Casa and Therese Comodini Cachia. After Comodini Cachia’s election to the Maltese Parliament last year, her European Parliament seat was won by Francis Zammit Dimech.

Vella de Fremeaux’s revelation means that both she and her husband had turned down requests by Busuttil to contest elections for the Nationalist Party. During last year’s PN leadership election, Adrian Delia confirmed that he had turned down offers to contest the 2013 and 2017 elections because of family and professional commitments.
