No Money, No Problem: Malta MEP Candidate Confirms She Hasn’t Spent A Single Cent On Her Campaign

From coffee mornings and flyers to social media adverts, thousands of euro are being spent in campaigning as the 41 candidates for the European Parliament election try to vie for people’s attention.

However, one of them, Partit Demokratiku’s Camilla Appelgren, has embarked on a pretty different strategy.

“I have spent nothing on my campaign, €0.00,” she said in a Facebook post. “I believe that the little money I have left every month (just like our Prime Minister, I struggle to save since I’m a single mum), shall go to better purposes.”

Appelgren, who runs the Malta Clean-Up initiative, told Lovin Malta she intended to run a completely money-free election campaign from the start and that she has actually rejected donations.

“I wasn’t totally unknown before the start of my campaign, but [running a money-free campaign] has made me work very hard to get my word out there,” she said. “If you have adverts everywhere, then you’ll reach a wider audience, but I believe I need to be among people and talk more to people.”

“I don’t believe in erecting tents in village squares; I’d rather do something for society and talk to people while doing it. I’ve always led my clean-up movement with one core message – you don’t need to be rich or have money to create a change. You need to be the change.”

Appelgren becomes the second MEP candidate to declare their campaign expenses before the election on 25th May. Nationalist candidate Peter Agius yesterday confirmed he has spent €22,640 since launching his campaign last September, of which only €3,600 were offset by donations.

“Although the law only requires us to declare our campaign expenditures after the election, I believe it is best to declare them before if we want the people to choose independent candidates with integrity,” Agius said.
