Joe Brincat, a prominent figure in Maltese politics and a much-loved named within the Labour Party, has passed away at 81 years old. A lawyer who served as PL’s deputy leader twice (from 1976 to 1980 and again between 2003 and 2008), Brincat is being remembered as someone who gave a lot for his party and country, with a number of political figures already taking to social media to post their tributes.

“The loss of Dr Joe Brincat shocked us,” Prime Minister Robert Abela wrote moments ago. “I always admired his honesty and tenacity in his profession, where he was a formidable advisory in the court, but always loyal. You always learn from him and you always knew where you stood with him.”

“We lost a ‘suldat tal-azzar’, a brilliant lawyer and a human being who always tells you things as they are,” Minister Owen Bonnici wrote, with many other politicians echoing his glowing tribute.

But beyond Brincat’s professional and political prowess, others took the time to remember the simple gestures which helped him stand out among the rest.

“For whoever, like myself, used to spend a long hours in the newsroom, we will definitely remember the food he used to send us every Saturday,” Minister Miriam Dalli – who started off as a journalist at ONE – wrote in her heartfelt tribute to Brincat. “He used to think of us and send us two big pots of soup to feed everyone. A small act which we will definitely keep remembering because it represents who he was.”

“No more suffering now,” former PL MEP Josianne Cutajar wrote. “Oh how I wish we could’ve exchanged a word or two in these last days!”

“I personally remained in contact with him right up to when his health took a turn to the worse,” Justice and Reform of the Construction Sector Minister Jonathan Attard wrote in his tribute. “Not just in a sense of friendship, but also because he was a point of reference with his legal and political experience, especially when it came to certain reforms we were working on.”

Lovin Malta would like to extend its condolences to the family of Dr Joe Brincat. Rest In Peace.
