In the end, projections that Norman Lowell had won between 15,000 and 20,000 votes in the European Parliament election were way off the mark.

The Imperium Europa leader won 8,238 votes on the first count, which went up to 9,693 after all the votes were transferred, a personal best for him, but nowhere near the figures that were being reported.

Lowell was nevertheless the most popular candidate from an alternative party. Partit Demokratiku candidate Cami Appelgren, a Swedish clean-up activist, came in second with a remarkable 3,053 votes, while former Alternattiva Demokratika chairperson Arnold Cassola came in third with 2,127 votes.

The small party leaders were all sorely disappointed. PD leader and MP Godfrey Farrugia only managed to obtain 1,668 votes, while AD chairperson Carmel Cacopardo only won 1,021.
